Keep Your Stick on the Ice With These Great Canadian Hockey Movies

April 3, 2017

“He shoots… He scores!” Eh, REEL CANADA! We’re talking about cinematographers and film composers, right?

Folks, we got hockey movies on the brain. Can you blame us? Aside from the fact that we are the back-to-back Olympic champions of the sport, these films show our true patriot love for all things pucky. Let’s take our sticks off the ice for a few moments to recap some of our favourite films that bring the rink to the big screen.

The Sweater (1980)

A beloved animated classic for fans of all ages, this legendary NFB short knits a lovely story based on Roch Carrier’s classic children’s book The Hockey Sweater, which charmingly depicts what happens when you’re wearing the wrong jersey. Haven’t seen it yet? Skate on over to the NFB website and get your head in the game!

The Rocket (1998)

In this must-see documentary, Maurice Richard – Number 9 – blasts into the stratosphere of hockeydom in a film that charts the meteoric rise of one of Canada’s iconic players. If you need us, we’ll be debating the outcome of Wayne Gretzky versus Maurice Richard in a shootout contest.

Goon (2011)

Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott), a pugilist by nature who has never held a hockey stick before in his life, is asked to become the “enforcer” for an amateur league team. Sure, The Rocket and The Sweater are sweeter than maple syrup, but gang, sometimes you need to slapshot your senses with a gloves-down send-up of our country’s favourite sport. And there’s a sequel coming soon! Goon: The Last of the Enforcers is set to hit the rinks real soon, with the directorial debut of actor Jay Baruchel.

Les Boys (series) (1997 ; 2007 – 2012)

These beloved garçons are a little past their prime, but their love of the game sees them lacing up for one more shot. At least, that’s the plot of the first movie in 1997, which was such a huge success in Québec (and North America!) that it spawned three more sequels and a five-season run television show. C’mon, three sequels? Talk about a hat trick!

Breakaway (2011)

The ice sure can be cold, but sometimes it melts. At least, that’s what happens to Rajveer (Vinay Virmani), who falls in love with his hockey coach’s sister during an important tournament. They say love is a team sport — well, we love hockey, and we love this movie!
