Breakaway Reunion Screening

Featuring members of the cast, crew and surprise guests, REEL CANADA is thrilled to present this special reunion screening of the hockey comedy Breakaway in partnership with Ontario Creates, TIFF, and Uninterrupted Canada.


Screening at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, this is an exciting event for an audience of new Canadians, featuring a film that has been a staple of our Welcome to Canada catalogue since its release in 2011.

Star, producer and co-writer of Breakaway

Born in Brampton, ON, Virmani is a producer, actor and writer whose work focuses on BIPOC stories, representation, and sport. He has produced over a dozen films, including The Grizzlies, Little Italy, Anything is Possible: The Serge Ibaka Story, Black Ice, Par-Lay: Bet on Yourself, Superfan: The Nav Bhatia Story, and Dr. Cabbie, which he also starred in. Virmani has served as a panellist on CBC’s Canada Reads and is the partner and chief content officer at UNINTERRUPTED Canada, through which he produces and hosts the series Kneading Dough Canada.


Actor (Inderjit Singh)

Born and raised in Toronto, Mukadam’s first acting role was at 11 years old in a McDonald’s commercial starring Wayne Gretzky. He was ultimately cut out of the final product. 

Undeterred, Al carried on to what has now been an over 20 year career with credits that include working alongside Jessica Chastain in Miss Sloane, Jason Sudekis in Kodachrome and Pamela Adlon in Better Things. Recently, Al was nominated twice for his work in the series, Pretty Hard Cases by the Canadian Screen Awards and is currently working with Andie MacDowell in the series The Way Home.


Actor (Jassi Singh)

Rupinder “Rup” Singh Magon is a Canadian songwriter, and actor born and raised in Montreal. He is a co-lead singer of the award-winning South Asian fusion band JoSH and Director of Magon Entertainment Inc. Rup officially began his acting career in Breakaway, and has gone to perform in The Black Prince, and Deepa Mehta’s Beeba Boys, and star in the award-winning short film Bonjour Ji. He also hosts the cooking show Out in the Open with Rup Magon, and appears in the CBC hit Decoys. His production company is currently developing its first feature film. 


Actor (hockey announcer), former host of Hockey Night in Canada Punjabi broadcast

An alumnus of Harvard University, University of Toronto, and Windsor University School of Medicine, Dr. Parminder Singh is a health care professional, broadcaster and actor. He is the founding host and voice of the Punjabi-language broadcasts of Hockey Night in Canada and the NBA, bringing the Maple Leafs and Raptors to new audiences in their own language. Passionate about diverse representation behind the mic and on screen, Dr. Singh made his acting debut in Breakaway, where he provides the play-by-play voice of the Speedy Singhs. Since then, he has contributed in various capacities to numerous short features.
