In Memoriam: Norman Jewison

Earlier this year, we lost a true national icon with the passing of legendary Canadian filmmaker and visionary Norman Jewison. An Oscar-nominated director, he played a vital role in shaping the landscape of Canadian cinema, and his dedication to advancing the art of storytelling inspired countless individuals and organizations, and paved the way for generations of Canadian filmmakers.

REEL CANADA deeply appreciates the role he played on our advisory committee, and we will be forever grateful for his guidance, and commitment to our cause of supporting Canadian film through initiatives like National Canadian Film Day.

Norman Jewison’s overall impact on the Canadian film industry is immeasurable, and his legacy will live on through the Canadian Film Centre, which he founded in 1988, as they continue to champion young Canadian talent, just as he did throughout his life.

His cinematic brilliance illuminated the screens and hearts of audiences worldwide. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, to his friends, and to all who love cinema.

This is a clip of Norman Jewison and Charles Officer, who also passed this year, in conversation at the Canadian Film Centre, discussing Jewison’s career within the context of the social justice movement.

On National Canadian Film Day, the Vancouver Film Festival is proud to present a rare opportunity to see the documentary The Life & Times of Norman Jewison, which features the late filmmaker on a journey across the country, on his way to the Vancouver International Film Festival.
